Memorial Blood Centers Issues Urgent Appeal for Donors of All Blood Types
St. Paul, MN
02/01/2019 10:55 AM
Due to severe weather, the nation is facing a dangerously low supply of all blood types. This means:
? There is just a 1-day supply of many blood types.
? There are not enough donations scheduled to make up for the weather-related reduction in donations.
? We anticipate the blood supply to remain dangerously low heading into the weekend.
For the safety of our donors and staff, all Memorial Blood Centers (MBC) blood drives today (1/30) are cancelled, and many community blood drives this week are also cancelled or postponed. MBC’s donor centers remain open. #PolarVortex2019 has caused an unusually high number of appointment cancellations at our donor centers, and we anticipate that this trend will continue through the week. This is a significant interruption in the availability of life-saving blood to patients in need.
To ensure a steady supply of blood for patients locally and across the country, local nonprofit MBC is asking supporters and donors:
? If you can safely brave the cold, our donor centers are open normal operating hours this week. Donations of all blood types are needed, as well as platelet donations.
? If you need to cancel your blood donation appointment, please reschedule for the near future to help us recover our inventory.
? Please share MBC’s posts on social media, to spread the word about the urgent need for all blood types.
To schedule a blood donation at one of our donor centers or an upcoming blood drive visit us online at MBC.ORG or call 1-888-GIVE-BLD (1-888-448-3253). You may be eligible to give blood if you are:
? In good health
? Free of antibiotics for 24 hours, unless taken for preventative reasons
? Symptom-free for at least 3 days following a cold or flu
? 17 years or older-or 16 with written Parental Consent (PDF)
